Dribbling During Exercise

Do you dribble during exercise? When you sneeze? Cough? Urinary leakage at any time is not normal. Luckily, there are simple, nonsurgical treatments to decrease urinary leakage.

For women, urinary incontinence can happen either when the pelvic floor muscle tone is too tight or not tight enough. A common mistake that many people make is to assume they need to perform hundreds of kegels daily to strengthen their pelvic floor muscles to avoid urinary leakage. For most of us, kegels are unnecessary, and may actually exacerbate the situation. Most women tend to have a hypertonic pelvic floor, aka muscles that are already too tight. Kegels are designed to tighten muscles; tightening muscles that are already too tight can lead to more urinary leakage.

Dr. Fields specializes in pelvic floor therapy to address urinary leakage as well as other pelvic concerns. If you have noticed that you leak urine when you exercise, laugh, sneeze, or cough, give us a call to address the muscle imbalance. Dr. Fields is currently at Sunnyside Collaborative Care every other Friday.
