LENS Neurofeedback

Low Energy Neurofeedback (LENS) services at Sunnyside Collaborative Care require an active Primary Care Provider (PCP).

Patients must have a PCP who can review their medical history and complete the required referral documentation prior to beginning treatment.

This referral requirement ensures:
• Appropriate diagnosis and medical oversight
• Documentation of functional impairment
• Coordination of care
• Compliance with insurance and medical necessity standards

If you do not currently have a PCP, we recommend establishing care with one prior to
pursuing LENS services.

PCP Referral Requirement FAQs

Why do I need a Primary Care Provider (PCP) referral to start LENS?
LENS Neurofeedback is a medical neuromodulation service. Even though it is non-invasive and well tolerated, we require coordination with your Primary Care Provider to ensure your care is medically appropriate and well documented.
Your PCP helps confirm:
• Your current diagnosis
• That symptoms are causing functional impairment
• That other appropriate treatments have been considered or tried
• That LENS is reasonable within your overall medical plan

This ensures safe, coordinated care.

Is this because LENS is dangerous?
No. LENS is non-invasive and has a strong safety profile. The PCP requirement is about medical oversight and responsible coordination of care, not safety concerns.

Do I need a referral even if I’m paying cash?
Yes. We require a PCP referral for all patients — including self-pay — because LENS is delivered as a medical service within an integrated care framework.

What if I don’t currently have a PCP?
You will need to establish care with a Primary Care Provider before starting LENS treatment. This ensures proper diagnosis and continuity of care.

What does my PCP need to do?
Your PCP simply needs to:
• Review your condition
• Select applicable diagnoses
• Indicate symptom severity and functional impact
• Sign the referral form

The referral packet includes everything they need and can be faxed directly to our office.

Does this mean my PCP has to manage my neurofeedback?
No. Your PCP is not responsible for delivering LENS. They are providing documentation and medical confirmation so that your care remains coordinated and appropriate.

Why is coordination important?
Many symptoms treated with neuromodulation overlap with:
• Mood disorders
• Neurologic conditions
• Post-concussive symptoms
• Headache syndromes
• Sleep disorders

Working with your PCP helps ensure nothing is overlooked and that your treatment plan is
medically sound.
